Damage to any part of the spine is considered to be a spinal cord injury, which includes the nerves at the end of the spinal canal. Nerve damage to the lower part spinal canal that involves the nerves can result in permanent damage to sensation, body functions below the site of the injury and strength. Many spine injuries are caused by simple car accidents, motorcycle wrecks, and slips and falls at a common grocery store. Others are birth related, or result from bad medicine.
Through scientific research, scientists have become optimistic that at some point it will be possible to repair spinal cord injuries. Studies in this area of research are conducted worldwide looking for promising answers.
Current spinal cord injury victims may feel that ever element of their life has been affected, but with treatment and rehabilitation it is possible for many spinal cord injury patients to lead independent and productive lives.
